Quick post on what’s happening in Atlanta right now

So there’s this beautiful trail in Atlanta called the South River Forest Trail. As we all know, Atlanta Georgia is renowned for their tree cover and historic forests. 

The City of Atlanta and corporations like Delta, AT&T and Amazon are funding a massive police training center that will destroy the forest.

Dubbed ‘cop city’ by many protesters, this will cost about $90 billion with a B to build. This will be used to further militarize Atlanta’s police leading to more incidents of police brutality in the city. 

On January 18th indigenous activist Manuel “Tortuguita” Teran was shot and killed by the police for defending this historic forest from destruction. Their reason? “He did not comply”. Many protests have been going on in Atlanta to defend this forest.

Since Tortuguita’s death, the situation has quickly deteriorated

This forest is very dear to me but I am unable to physically protest at the moment, so I am handing this off to Tumblr to spread awareness. Rebloging this may help this tragedy become part of national news instead of just an Atlanta problem.

So the ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act) basically prevents the removal of Native American children from their homes, which essentially removes them completely from their culture and whitewashes them. Obviously, that’s not very good, which is why the tribes fought to get the bill instated and now people are trying to remove it, which is why it’s going to the SCOTUS. Which is why that link above is very helpful!

Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman for most my life, died on Thursday. He was the Batman who bought Harley a dress because he know what it was like to have a bad day. The Batman who always tried to save the villain. Who respected Dick living his own life. But Kevin was so much more than that.

You can read a lot of articles right now about his life, his acting career before becoming Batman, but they don’t tell the rest of the story. They don’t tell you that he was blacklisted for being gay. That he watched so many of his friends die of AIDs and worried that this mysterious disease might strike him. It does not tell about his dad’s death or drinking, or that he supported his schizophrenic brother.

Kevin told his story in this year’s issue of DC Pride.  The story is called Finding Batman. DC is making it available online for free, so that everyone can read it. There is a joke that says “If you can be anyone in the world, be yourself. Unless you can be Batman. Then be Batman.” I would say be Kevin Conroy. Care for others. Find meaning in your work and make your work meaningful. Take the hate and put it behind you. And never stop trying.

This one is for poverty in mi'kmaq communities and their website offers education on the disparity people face when living on the reservations

This one is for disabled mi'kmaq peoples as accessibility is quite difficult when many of us live under the poverty & in incredibly rural areas

This one is for city natives, their goal is to branch into urban areas where our language and culture can be accessed communally
